Display Screen Resolution

Date: Dec 19    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 356

Just dual installed the New Ubuntu 8.04 & Windows XP on HDD. Very nice
the way both systems installed. Still in the process of tweeking the
settings. I've discovered that the maximum display screen resolution
with Ubuntu is 800 x 600. Not a big deal, but would like to know if it
possible to set display to a higher resolution, such as 1024 x 768 or
is it something I'm missing?

Plan on making the Ubuntu the main OS as I will be using the EMC2 for
Sherline CNC. It was interesting to note that there were 245 updates
to install since Ubuntu 8.04 has been released. I have a ways to go
with Ubuntu 8.04 but it looks very promising.

Thank you for your assistance concerning this matter.

Well, first of al, welcome to the single best OS on the market today in
my opinion. Second of all, I had the same problem when I installed
directly from 8.04, I don't know what the problem is. But I installed
from 7.10 and then upgraded to 8.04 from there and had no problem, the
display options listed just fine.

I'll keep that in mind if it
comes to that. Not sure if I have the capacity to install another OS
to HDD without creating a disaster. Was kind of delighted to get it
right the first time.

It all depends on your monitor size and your video card. What do they
support?
I have a 22" widescreen LCD monitor and can go up to 1680x1050.

Monitor is 15" CRT - Video Card TNT2 Model 64 32 RAM! I'm confused
as Windows XP using this same card and monitor is able to
display higher screen resolution choices. This is my first attempt
using Ubuntu and Linux per se. I have a ways to go but I like what I
see with Ubuntu.

What have you done so far to try to increase your resolution, have you tried
manually editing your xorg.conf?

Other than using Ubuntu's system preferences regarding resolution
upon startup. I haven't the foggiest of how to manually edit
xorg.conf? What's the procedure?

This an nvidia card. You may have to install the nvidia restricted
driver. Go to system/administration/hardware drivers. If it does not
say nvidia accelerated graphics driver in use, then you have to install
it. There should be a way to install it from within that window. I
cannot remember exactly what it was, but when I first installed hardy,
there was a message on the top taskbar that told me to do this so I
clicked on that message and it took me to this window. Sorry I cannot
be of much more help, but I think the restricted driver will help you.

If you have a NVidia card you may have to install "special" drivers for
that card. Try apt-get install nvidia xxxx (card type number.

Got your note Errol. TNT2 Model 64 Card. XP is able handle the
higher screen resolution using same card. I'm sure Ubuntu has some
way to increase above 800 x 600 but this senior citizen is missing
something.
