i am a newbie to ubuntu too and find it very useful.

once you have the manual, suggest you read on how to upgrade to version
12.04 LTS. except for updates, it will not change for the next five years,
unlike Windows.

alternstely, if you face any difficulty, more learned members here will
advise you on how to do it. just post again asking how to upgrade from the
version you are on (11.1 ?) to 12.04 LTS.
