Installation Problem

Date: Dec 18    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 205

I finally got ubuntu 8.04.1 installed. It is right now
downloading updates. It turns out Gobby was right. I replace the video
card with a more up to date card. All went well after that. After the
install was completed the OS immediately grabbed the Internet and
started down loading updates. That answered that question.

Now, I believe it was Roy, suggested I use a router. Yes, I'd like to
do that. I have one that I used before I started using a new ISP. The
problem I have is the Internet source has an USB output. I don't know
of anyway I can go directly to a router using the USB. I've not see a
router that will accept a USB, just CAT-5. I would really appreciate
any suggestions.

Right now I'm using an old hub. I have four computers connected
together via Ethernet LAN. I also have an access point in the network.
That supplies wireless connection to my laptop. The Internet is
connected to on of the computer via the USB. I then use Internet
Sharing. All this seems to work. I guess I have close to the same deal
as if I were using a router instead of a hub. I would rather us a
router. Again, any thoughts on how to accomplish this?

Internet Connection Sharing works in Ubuntu.

You want to have your Ubuntu box connected to the Internet via the USB
port, and provide a gateway to the rest of your LAN via Ethernet, right?

The "Firestarter" firewall contains an Internet Connection Sharing
feature in its setup wizard. It works well for me.

I have static IP addresses assigned to all of my local computers'
Ethernet ports. I've set up the "client" computers to use the
Internet-connected computer as a gateway. I've also had to provide
the client computers with explicit DNS addresses.

Your setup isn't quite the same as mine, but I'd bet that
"Firestarter" would be a good place to start.

That isn't exactly what I would like to do. I use WindowsXP
Pro to provide the gateway. All works well, including Ubuntu. Ubuntu
fell into place automatically. What I would like to do is use a router
instead of a hub which would supply the gateway to the Internet instead
of Windows Internet Sharing.
