8.10 Installation Problems

Would appreciate some help on Ubuntu 8.10 installation.

Did the MD5Sum on ISO file and integrity check on the CD. Both passed
successfully.

The system froze (hanged for almost 6 hours) after asking me the preferred
language and timezone (no noise of CD churning either).

All I see is the blank Ubuntu screen (brownish color) with something like a task
bar on the bottom and top.

Could my system's configuration might have to do something with it? Its running
of 256 RAM and 80G drive?

Did you burn this 8.10 CD or get a CD from Ubuntu?
It could still not load properly but try booting again.

If its a live CD it should boot right through to the desktop if you just
hit the install option and from the desktop give you an install icon.

I actually downloaded the ISO and burnt it on my own. I didn't try the Live CD
installation. I can give that a try.

I did check the bare minium system requirements for the desktop and thought my
256RAM machine should work.

Apparently I don't have the Live CD option. The existing OS (windows) had some
issue and I can't boot up the machine anyways.

You can order free from Ubuntu or they sell them on ebay You may find
one in a local store

Your 256mb will work just fine. Yopu may have just burnt an image and
not the ISO, you can go here for advice

It is best to get a Live CD though because you can use it on any computer.
