Canon iP8500 printer

Using Ubuntu 8.04, I have a Canon iP8500 connected via a USB port and
using as a driver the Canon PIXMA iP4000 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.0.2.
This works to a point on most straight text, any graphics are
overprinted and messed up. Also not sure that I'd ever get any report
from the printer indicating any of the ink tanks that need replacing.
My question is, could I install the windows based Canon driver and
support program using WINE? Has anyone tried this and what happened?
If not, would there be a better linux based driver that I should be
using for this printer??
