Printers

Using KIbuntu [I like KDE] long term support version - on Tosh Sat L/Top Dual
boot [XP]. Home network running on other computers [3] and all can be seen
and accessed via Samba shares out of the box. No network setup of any kind
has been done. Access to windows partition OK. Access to server and other
machines OK. Other machines can't see laptop.

I have had no trouble whatsoever with the system until today. Everything works
out of the box and [compared to my struggle with FreeBSD] the dual boot set
up and installation has been a very good experience.

However I am having considerable problems with printers. We have an ancient HP
printer a 670C as the network printer which from XP/FreeBSD works perfectly
across the other machines XP/BSD. However under CUPS, setting it up on the
laptop gets only as far as installing the driver. There are several drivers
listed for this printer. However when one is selected in Printer Set Up [even
as admin] I get the message that the driver selected is not available or that
I do not have authority to proceed. Strange as one is highlighted in the list
as the preferred option.

Thus I next plug a Canon Pixma ip4000 directly into the usb port and bingo it
sets up nicely, loading what purports to be the correct driver. Then a test
page can be printed in one corner of an A4 sheet and regardless of which
program is used to print an A-4, a full page print out cannot be achieved,
either using the printer set up menu or indeed a document direct from Open
Office. I am obviously missing something or doing something exceedingly
stupid :o)

I have no problem with using either printer as long as one eventually works
correctly.

Incidentally can anyone point me toward the definitive list of UNIX compatible
[no Ghostprint needed] printers? The old HP network printer badly needs
retiring.

Some how I have messed up my printers in 10.04. I had them working once
and now they aren't. I look in System/preferences or System/Administration
and don't see printers listed. How do I get that back to work with?
