If you have windows already set up on your computer, re-installing it
would not wipe out Ubuntu. One can even install a different windows on
the same partiton. It has already been recognized by grub. What one
cannot do is install a fresh windows after installing Ubuntu as windows
will the overwrite Ubuntu.

This is the point. After reinstalling Windows XP one has to reinstall GRUB so
that both Ubuntu and Windows can be booted. In the case of reinstalling Windows
2000 this does not happen, both can be booted. I will retry this with Windows 7.
