Setup wireless

Date: Dec 10    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 336

I am trying to get my wireless card working. The card has been in the
machine a long time but has not been in use in about a year. It is a
Linksys card But I have no numbers as to make and model. My ubuntu
8.04 64 bit system can't seem to see it. I don't believe I have the
correct driver on board. I have been to the Ubuntu 8.04 help page and
spent a great deal of yesterday trying to work my way through this.
Without a card number I can't pick a driver to install. Is there a way
to get the card number without taking the card out and actually reading
the numbers or a way to pick a driver??

The Belkin device # 700f, may be a RTL8185 chipset.

Answer #4    Answered On: Dec 10

A Google search of, Belkin 700f, turns up several potentially useful message
threads. In particular, if you use the 64-bit version of Ubuntu, this one might
be of interest:

www.linuxquestions.org/.../belkin-rtl8185l-chipset-pci-wi\
fi-install-540070/

As well, it is probably worth visiting Belkin's site.

I am Using a Linksys card which I think is actually Cisco. Not
tonight but likely in the morning I will remove the card and get the
numbers off of it . With that I should be able to match it up with a
driver. I hope.

Answer #6    Answered On: Dec 10

The usual procedure is to go to System, Administration, Hardware Drivers. It
will tell you if there is a proprietary driver available and will install it
if that is your choice. Afterwards you need to set up your network and
connect.

If it shows in Hardware drivers, but is 'inactive' then you need to install
the driver. If no driver shows, then you may have to use ndiswrapper and use
a Windows driver or search for a Linux one.

This is the GUI approach and works for most wireless cards.

I have used 'Everst Home Edition' in the past for problems that you describe, it
is free and stable. Google it and download if you still have windows running, it
almost always finds at least a starting point...

'Belarc Advisor' does a similar job and also is free...

Answer #8    Answered On: Dec 10

Both of those programs are Windows programs.
