Wireless Function

Date: Feb 07    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 409

I am in the process of "testing" ZORIN UBUNTU and I am unable to connect
wirelessly using a RALINK RT2070 USB DONGLE.Despite the fact that I am dual
booting with UBUNTU 12.04 which I am also "testing" and which connects
flawlessly? Both operating systems Wireless connections are set up in exactly
the same way using a WEP security password. The ZORIN o/s try's to connect but
keeps timing out after a minute.I have looked in TERMINAL and found a message
that quote "access point not associated" is displayed.NB I do not have a problem
connecting to the WEB with a CABLE using ZORIN.
Does anyone have any ideas? and yes The All Users box is ticked.

I don't have a solution, just a couple of comments.

Zorin includes an older kernel than Ubuntu 12.04, which might be a
consideration. Does Zorin support Backports?

WEP is better than nothing, but not by much. If possible, use WPA.

Hi apparently Zorin Kernel latest is 2.6.38-13 and still runs Gnome 2,now
resolved by switching to a Zyxel Dongle and now have wireless
function..

While we are delighted to offer help to anyone with a Linux related issue
this is not the place to fined Zorin experts. Have you tried going to the
Zorin website (zorin-os.com) and accessing the Forums, under Help?

I certainly agree with gord_lib's cautions about WEP security. WPA is
definitely the way to go.

Reason for WEP use is I had an issue with
WPA set up which my Internet provider..SKY couldn't resolve. As far as the
Zorin Issue is concerned I tried asking the Zorin Forum but couldn't get
the problem resolved other than the comment about Zorin Kernel and
Gnome2,so I tried a Zyxel Dongle and now have wireless.

Glad things are working for you at last. Most ISP's aren't very familiar
with Linux and aren't interested in being helpful with setup issues.

WPA is not carrier dependant and WEP isn't any easier to set up - they are
just being lazy! Time to try WPA again and it will now work.

Zorin comes out far less often than Ubuntu, on which it is based. So the
kernel will indeed be older. Its latest still does not have Linux 3. Older
versions of Zorin would be a year older than that. Not sure which version
we are talking about.

I do not think that backports will help as it will likely cause some
compatibility problems and result in errors due to not being aligned with
Ubuntu versions. The only suggestion that I could make would be to compile
a newer kernel, but that is easier said than done for many users.

I know that Zorin is good for Windows users, but going with something to
far from the Ubuntu tree has its problems. If you cannot get it to work
then try Ubuntu or a derivative that is newer and which allows for version
compatibility.

You may get wireless working but it may take more time than if you were
trying to do it in Ubuntu. Instead search for your wireless and an older
version of Ubuntu such as natty or maverick using those search terms.

I am not a novice but still learning,as i'm dual
booting Ubuntu 12.04 and Zorin Latest version with Kernel 2.6.38-13 and
Gnome 2.I have now resolved the issue by swapping the Ralink Dongle for a
Zyxel one and the issue is resolved. One final point I do find the layout
pleasing and would be much easier for a new ex windows user to get
around..

I am glad to hear that you are working in ZorinOS. It is set up to help
Windows users and I say to use what works best for you! Please keep us
informed how it turns out in the end (whether the original wireless gets
working) and update us periodically on your thoughts on ZorinOS as this
info may help another user thinking about switching to Linux.
