Is it safe to install RT kernel in 10.04 for multimedia purposes?

I'm a Linux newbie and I'd like to have some clarifications. I was using Ubuntu
9.04 and 64Studio 3.0 beta on my i386 desktop. I recently upgraded to 10.04 but
I don't want to keep the 64Studio for multimedia applications. I'd prefer to
install the multimedia softwares onto the 10.04. (Reason is: I don't enjoy
having to restart my system just to switch between the regular desktop and
multimedia PC.)

To achieve this (using 10.04 for multimedia), I know that I would need a RT
kernel (jackd seem to have many xruns on the regular desktop). My question is:
can I safely install the latest RT kernel on my 10.04 desktop and use the
multimedia applications? Would it affect the everyday applications on the PC?
Applications such as OpenOffice, Scribus etc.

I'm open to suggestions and advice. I'm comfortable with typing commands if it's
necessary to tweak the system a bit.
