I'm not sure what "detail mode" is, but I've found that it's good to have
the changes applied in a terminal window. It's an option under
Settings-Preferences in Synaptic: "Apply changes in a terminal window". I
think it carries over to update manager, thought it might be an option there
too. Often there are prompts to continue or choose from alternatives. In the
terminal it is immediately obvious but otherwise might appear to stall
indefinitely while awaiting those keystrokes.
