Alt+F2. Thanks, I've been trying to remember that.

Apparently Grub2 took over from Grub (referred to as Grub legacy) with Karmic.

However if you have upgraded (rather than reinstalled) it looks like you may
have retained Grub legacy (so menu.lst would still apply).

You can find out which you have by looking at the version number, either at the
top of the Grub menu or with the command grub-install -v

Be aware though that these version numbers are confusing. Grub legacy shows
version 0.97. Grub2 shows 1.98, or from Natty onwards, version 1.99

It is strongly recommended NOT to edit grub.conf. There's plenty of advice in
the forums as to ways it may be done, starting here:
