Question about Applet Viewing

I am doing some self study of Java and the book I am using has an
early chapter on applets. When I try to view the sample applets from
the j2sdk folder, like Tic-Tac-Toe, in Internet Explorer, it only
shows up as a grey box. How do I fix this or view the applet
correctly?
