Using Swing in applets

I'm currently working on making a chat
application and my question is, is it ok to use swing
on the applet or will it be to unreasonable to require
users to have and updated jvm?

it is better to use the swing.
Now, updated  jvm is routine matter.
Moreover, you can make available the jvm  on the site for
download.
