Audio variations in Ubuntu

My Kdenlive USB OS has a very low volume. I thought it was my new audio system
until I recently installed 10.04 and was blown out by the volume. Switching back
to Kdenlive, again, very low volume.

The difference is huge, at half volume and setting my audio amp to 1/2 volume I
have full sound under 10.04 (with SOME applications on SOME boot ups). Even when
accessing a file in 10.04 from Audacity it blares out at first and then calms
down to match the settings of the app.

I have tried adjusting KdenLive with the sound accessary but it is not in this
mechanism that the problem exists. Suggestions.
