From a terminal type top and see what pid seems to relate to the palmpilot.
The other thing to check is services, to make sure some auto dohickey is not
running and still trying to find the palm. I'm in kde atm and assume that you
are running gnome since you said ubuntu, check that nothing is in your startup
folder that might be autostarting.
