Date: Jan 08    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 227

I have a lot of updates failing on my laptop, like 20 to 30.

W: Failed to fetch
security.ubuntu.com/.../libssl0.9.8_0.9.8k-7ubuntu\
8.4_i386.deb
404 NOT Found [IP:91.189.91.166 80]

Im running 10.04.

Im curious: ubuntu8.4_i386.deb <- does that mean 8.04 as in ubuntu
version?

Did you install anything outside of the repositories? It looks that it may
be the case and that it is causing issues.

When this happens I give it awhile to see if it clears up. Then if it
doesn't I completely remove (purge) the offending package, clean the cache
(otherwise it installs the package on your computer which may be the source
of the problem without downloading a new one) and re-install.

I think I have been down this path too. How do you 'clean the cache'?

sudo apt-get clean

This removes the downloaded packages stored locally on your machine.
