Updating Firefox with Ubuntu 7.10

Date: Dec 02    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 373

I've been having trouble lately using my present version of Firefox with Ebay.
I've been advised to update to the latest version of Firefox and I wonder if
anybody can tell me how to do this please? (I need an idiots guide)
I don't know what version of Firefox I have. It came with the Ubuntu 7.10 live
CD a few years back.
My PC is an oldie so I can't upgrade to the later versions of Ubuntu.

you could try installing the new version, 3.6.3
it could be as simple as a simple command:

sudo apt-get upgrade firefox

I think, since 7.1 is no longer supported, you can't apt-get anything. You
would have to build any upgrades from source. Maybe I'm wrong on that. But
I do know there are some security holes in the older kernels that I have
read about... so might it be time to think about upgrading?

Mozilla website is offering me a Linux friendly download called firefox
3.6.3.tar.bz2 which I assume I must "save to disc"??
The download file is a bzip archive, I have NO idea what that is :(
PLease bear in mind I'm a knuckle dragging computer imbecile so where exactly do
I tell my box to store the downloaded file??
How do I install it after its downloaded??
I'm assuming its not going to self install like if I got it from the package
manager feature (which does not offer me a Firefox upgrade)

It is just a compressed binary file. If you right-click on the file it will
offer to Extract it. Linux does not have executables in the same way that
Windows does (no exe files). Any binary file or script can be made
executable by changing permissions.

Once you extract the files you will need to use sudo to become root and then
copy the files to the proper directory for firefox. Mine is at
usr/lib/firefox-3.6.3/

Yours may say something different as my version is different. It should have
a file called firefox.sh

The easiest way to do this is to use a terminal to launch nautilus as root.
Open a terminal and type sudo nautilus

Then navigate to your folder where you extracted the files. Copy everything
and navigate to the usr/lib/firefox-x folder and paste everything in. This
will replace the old with the new.

This is not guaranteed to work. I have never done this (mainly because I
have never needed to). It may cause compatibility prblems with other
settings for firefox which are spread across several folders such as in etc
and usr/share.

You can also run firefox.sh from your extracted folder but flash and other
plugins may not work.
