Unable to update

I have been unable to update my system for a couple of days now.
First of all it was just with one package but is now four and so is
becoming more serious.

The error message I get is as follows:

I had the same problem this morning when trying to update. I shut the
process down and restarted it when the notification icon came back up. It
ran smoothly from that point on.

I have shut my computer down several times since I first received the message
and tried to update at least once a day but it still doesn't want to work.

It looks like you can get on the web.
Have you tried opening up the terminal and do it manually

sudo aptitude update

Strange thing this morning. Went to check my emails,
clicked the thunderbird icon... didn't load, clicked the firefox icon
didn't load, clicked the update icon and just the outer shape of the
update window opened. Had to do a hard reboot and then it wouldn't and
tons of code kept appearing. Kept having to do hard reboots, tried
safe mode, again loads of code until eventually it came to a place
where i was clearly expected to type something in but what?

Good job i still have a windows drive (hangs head in shame!) that
enables me to get on to the internet, but in my defence i do use it
blackboxed with BBLean.

Call me a conspiracy theorist but this did happen on September 1st

[Monday Sept 3] Hi Guys, whilst i'm sure what has been said has helped
some people but no me i'm afraid!

I still cannot get my ubuntu to start, i have no ideas left as to what
i need to do

I have some valuable pictures on the hard drive. I have used my copy
of damn small linux to navigate my way to the relevant directories but
evidently i do not have the necessary permissions to read or copy to a
flash drive.

I just don't understand what is going on, Sept 1st update has right
royally screwed up my system, what is Michael Dell gonna be thinking
if all his linux systems start failing like this?

If you only get the login prompt when booting up Ubie
type in

sudo fdsk

Lets see if that would fix some stuff.

Answer #6    Answered On: Jan 04

well tried that! at the prompt i type in anything it
comes up something like bash doesn't recognise x, y or z including
sudo fdsk!

Worth noting that whilst it was scrolling through millions of lines of
script i kept seeing references to '5000' and '3248'... if that helps any!

My heart is sinking... linux is meant to be so more robust than windows!

Answer #7    Answered On: Jan 04

just type in
ME BAD!
sudo fsck

It is like the nasty word with a S instead a U. I cannot believe I hosed that
easy command.

I have backtracked my problems to following the instructions to install and
configure Beryl on my computer. I have since removed it (I wasn't impressed)
and the configuration file I created during the installation process but cannot
update my system now.

Any idea's?

Run this in the terminal
sudo aptitude update

Please post what the out put is. I think it just may be a edit or two in the
/etc/apt/sources.list

If you find the line that causes the error go into it and put 2 ## in font of
the line. It tells the system to ignore it. If the update runs fine after that.
Then it will be safe if you wish to delete.

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Thanks for that. The sources.list file is as follows:

Answer #12    Answered On: Jan 04

I have the system working now. when I saw the link to the page
talking about proxies I remembered about a package I tried. It is an anonymiser
(obtained through Ubuntu). When I removed it and rebooted the updates came
through easily
