Floppy Drives

Date: Feb 12    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 275

I put 10.04 on a machine for someone and they have a floppy drive that they
still use. Lots of old data. Once I had the OS installed - it shows the floppy
but I can not gain access to the floppy. I checked it on this persons laptop
that has a floppy drive so the floppy is okay. The drive was working fine before
installing Ubuntu over XP so Im thinking there is just something there Im not
seeing. Any idea what to look for?

I went through this too. At some point (09.10?) Ubuntu removed GUI support for
floppy drives.

I recall it works fine from a command prompt though. My interest was to make
IMG files using dd of all my floppies and churned through quite a few that way
on my 10.04 box.

Well, this computer will be used by someone in their
80's so... I will have to do some research on floppy gui

Last time I checked Puppy Linux had a nice GUI that included floppy disks.

Just checked again, with LuPu 5.28 and it does show the floppy and
open it in a graphical display. It's not ideal to have to boot up
another O/S but it is fast to load and very quick and responsive to
use.

I found a site that talks about a script (like the right click to access as
root scripts)
that you click on to mount the drive and then you can supposedly access the
floppy. When I get up tomorrow Im going to try that out.

Yea, I dont want to have to install another OS on this machine. The person
who
this is for is already uneasy about Ubuntu but I cant reinstall XP and it
cant
handle another OS. Something will work out.

If the PC with the floppy drive has a USB port ,you might be able to
transfer the files to an xGB USB stick on another PC ;then the files can be
transferred to the original PC´s HD or left on the stick (doing away with
the floppies altogether) Instead of saving to a stick you can save to a SD
module (in a USB caddy) With the files on the SD module the module can be
locked preserving the files. To me this would be the KISS solution to the
problem.

Yes, I could do this for her but she could not do this.
This woman barely uses her original XP much less
Ubuntu
