the app requires interaction to drop downs and text boxesrunning the app also needs to be portable so different people canedit and configure how it is run. I decided on excel because thereare a number of other process steps that already use excel but thefirst involves running this app.

objects in a windows app have propertiesif I had for example mercury quick test pro I could capture the namesof the objects in an app and the properties and settings to drive theapp
I may be mistaken, but don't you have to have a method to expose thoseproperties to access them?You may want to look into automation products like AutoIT to startprograms and fill in the settings for you.
