using 7.04 on a NEC 17" monitor

I changed the Screen Area from 800x600 to 1024x768. It said I needed to reboot.
Then I got a message
saying something like OK to change configuation and now I boot into a blank
screen?

Any ideas on how to fix before I just reformat and reload?

I wanted to change since some of the stuff is below screen level.
