Try booting as normal then opening Nautilus as root ( sudo nautilus
from terminal ) then change the permissions on the backup file to your
normal login instead of root. Make sure you tick the box to apply to
sub folders. Now see if Back in Time can see the backup and add to it.

I cant do anything with nautilus. Its crashing over and over again.

Even when run as root ?? If so then have you tried re-installing
Nautilus through Synaptic - right click on nautilus and select for
re-installation. If that doesn't work try a complete removal and then
install again.

Nautilus is not the only file manager. You can install XFCE's Thunar or
KDE's Dolphin in Ubuntu if Nautilus crashes.

Doesnt fix it.
I cant even see the log file because its filling up so fast.

Try reinstalling libcairo2 - that seems to be what's causing the
problem, according to the error message.

Did you tried to clean the .gnome2 directory ?
It's just sometime some file can be corrupted and it could affect Nautilus.
Just take a look and try to delete some file. You may delete everything if you
will, it will be recreated by gnome on next logon.

I couldnt access any directory from the system once it started blinking.

Im on a new system now. Wiped it all out.
