Sounds like the wireless driver in 12.10 isn't fully compatible with
your wireless card. It can see there's a signal but the driver doesn't
enable the card properly. Often the case with Broadcom chipset Wi-Fi
and the only way around is to use an Ethernet connection, or change
the Wi-Fi card to one that's compatible ( not really worth doing for a
Live CD ).
