The password you set to get into Ubuntu has nothing at all to do with
getting connected to the internet. What I suspect is that you are
using wireless and the wireless card isn't being enabled ? If this is
the case, then use a cable connection to the router to get the initial
install done and run updates. This usually brings the wireless card to
life so you can then connect with it and lose the ethernet cable.
