wireless connect at boot

Date: Dec 10    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 344

i just installed ver 8.10 after finding the my USB wireless wifi works
with it out of the box. however i find that everytime i boot it asks me for my
system password in order for it to connect to the network (not to be confused
with the router pass-phrase ) i understand needing to give explicit permission
when installing software and the like but this isn't (or shouldn't be) a
critical area, i would like to know if there is a way around this or how i can
give it auto permission to connect

Get used to giving passwords in Linux. They are for your protection and the
reason why Linux is more secure than Windows. Any attempt to bypass them
weakens your security. You need to change your thinking when you move a new
OS.

Network manager does not ask me for my password, so I am not sure how you
are connecting to the internet. Some other network managers may ask for
passwords, though. Network manager shows the wireless networks in range when
I click on it and I just select the one I want from the list. If it is set
up properly it will have all of the information it needs to connect and
attempt to do so when you choose it.

If you want automatic connection you may want to consider installing wicd
(pronounced wicked) which is a daemon and connects before you even logon.

How odd. Network Manager connects automatically for me. I've even made
"significant" changes to the router setup (password or no password), and it
still connects automatically upon logon, or after a reboot of the router.

yeah this is the way it should be so im wondering if theres some line or command
i might need to add somewhere in the file-system if i knew where this was being
controlled from i might or might not be able to remedy this

Try this:-
Right click on Network Manager Icon, Edit your connection, tick the box at the
bottom of the window which states 'make available to all users', that seems to
make it automatic (on roaming mode DHCP just now). Ubuntu UNR 9.04, Acer Apire
One.

funky USB hub i guess its not restricted to windows that once in a while i have
to unplug it and plug it back in.
