Ubuntu linux and the NVidia GeForce GT 240 video card.

I am attempting to install Ubuntu 11.04 on a new hard drive here. When the
Live CD boots up it comes up into a screen full of hash. If I interrupt the
boot and get the menus with language, etc, and select the Live option it
boots up into a screen full of hash. I have not yet attempted an actual
install so I don't know what will happen with that but why is the Live
boot-up failing like this?

The monitor tells me it is defaulting to 1600x1200.

11.10 is the latest version. Have you tried it? It may have this
problem fixed. If not, then consider the following...

It looks like 11.04 version might ship with the nouveau nividia driver,
which is broken for your driver version. Granted I am just getting this
information from Google, as I have no experience with nividia graphics.

See here for related bug report:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/+bug/763052

Somewhere near the top is a description of the nouveau packages that need
to be removed and how to install the nivedea-current packages.

Here is another way to install the nivedea current packages:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1771806

Maybe that will get you started? You would probably have to use the
alternate installer to install, then boot into recovery mode, then add new
drivers... Assuming that is the problem.

Suggests that the Live CD isn't loading correctly so have you tried
running this on a different system ?

If the CD works on that then the problem may be the CD/DVD drive on
the system that doesn't load. Try a bootable USB drive instead and see
how you get on with that.

Wanting to become familiar with Unity before the release of Ubuntu 12.04LTS
and wanting to go from a VGA to VGA, DVI and HTMI I purchased a
PNY VCGGT5201XPB GeForce GT 520
from NewEgg. Ubuntu 11.10 works great with it.

I tried 11.04 after it came out last spring but it was slow and the
interface, I just felt I was going backwards.

There could be several problems
The download could have been bad.
Your graphic interface is not compatible with 11.04
11.10 may have corrections that might correct the problems you are having.

The next thing I would try is 11.10 and see if that corrects the problem.
If that doesn't work you might consider getting a new display adapter, that

The GeForce GT 240 is DirectX 10.1 compatible
The GeForce GT 520 is DirectX 11 compatible

If start looking for a display adapter, before you buy ask here if anyone
is using it and how well it works.

When I installed Ubuntu 11.10 the display came up in 2D. Going to the
,
it showed my display adapter with a '(version current) [recommended]'
'active'
and a '(post-release updates) (version current-update)' 'not active'
replacement
I installed the update and now I'm in 3D.
The graphics looked great in 2D and even greater in 3D.

It sounds like a bad disk which could mean a bad ISO (redownload), a bad
burn (burn at a slower speed) or a bad CD (burn to a different disk).
