Ubuntu and Droid phone devices

Date: Jan 29    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 316

I am at the point where I am very frustrated with my iPhone, and in about six
months I'll be eligible to upgrade/replace it. I'm interested in moving to a
Droid-based device. My question (and it is probably on of those, "Well, duh!"
kind of questions :-) ) is, will a Droid-based phone sync with a Ubuntu system
and Thunderbird/Evolution/your mail/contact manager of choice?

Something I'd be interested in knowing as well.

You'll not be surprised to find that you're not the first to ask the question

Thanks for the links! Glad I'm not the only nube with these kinds of questions!
(Actually, I could work on this stuff for years and still consider myself a
nube. I've been an active licensed ham for over four years and still consider
myself a nube at that, too :-) ).

One thing learned from the links is I probably **won't** get the Samsung Galaxy.
I'll probably look at an HTC device, or check with some friends who have Droid
devices and see which ones they like/recommend.

Would anyone mind commenting on use of open office format documents?
Is it possible to view/create/edit? What I have found from my google
searching leaves me a bit confused as to what the native ability is
here and how functional some of the market options actually are.

Regarding Galaxy Devices and a few other comments for the OP: Then
newer Galaxy SII is supposedly better with battery life. I'm not sure
what other issues might have scared you away from Samsung. I have
read that Banshee works well syncing music/playlists/podcasts. You
can also install a local ssh client and interact with the built-in adb
shell on your android phone. This is all from what I have read, as I
will not own an android phone until later this month.

Also, for things phone related I have found xda-developers to be as
useful a resource as is this list and ubuntu-forums are for linux.
You can search google for specific questions/resolutions there by
appending 'site:forum.xda-developers.com' to your google search
(without the quotes). fwiw, dual-core processor phones seem to be the
wave of the near future for right now.

Android syncs natively with Google apps and only in a round about way with
anything else. However, it is possible to sync other apps with Google/ gmail
also.
