Date: Feb 18    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 344

I was using skype when it crashed and crashed my system. After everything
restarted, when I started firefox, if I type in an address it attempts to go to
that address but then crashes. I really dont want to uninstall and then
reinstall and then have to reinstall all my apps but ... any suggestions??

Under History click on Restore Previous Session, but uncheck the Skype tab/page
that caused the problem. After so many attempts it may offer to do a re-install
by itself, at least on Bodhi that happened.

I still had the same issues after doing that.

I opted to remove it.
I did a complete uninstall and then reinstall but,
oddly, all my settings are still there. All my ext,
everything. I thought that is what COMPLETE
uninstall was supposed to remove.

Im glad I dont have to redo it though :D
And - its working.

I have found that a complete uninstall using
synaptic package manager on applications don't
remove setup information. For instance on Thunderbird
setup and emails don't get removed. That is I think
because setup and data created for that application
are kept in your Home directory usually in a dotted
folder/directory. But if there is a problem with some
part of the application a new reload will restore the
compiled application and hopefully allow a restore for
use, as you found in Skype. I hope it continues to keep
working for you.

On this subject - where do you find some of the files like preferences? and
user?

I have FX ESR, and don't want it updating. FX is sticking too much bloat in
there that you have to edit out. Same goes for TB. You can't do it through
about:config.

Here's the line entry before editing.
//@line 2
"e:\builds\moz2_slave\rel-m-esr10-w32-bld\build\browser\app\profile\channel-pref\
s.js"
pref("app.update.channel", "esr");

I found out how to edit in windows, but how to stop in Ubuntu?

I'm looking for browser and mail apps that don't update to add links to social
sites and other junk - just security. I like the extensions in FX and find them
too hard to use in Opera. I won't use Chrome.

You FF settings are in the hidden folder /.mozilla/firefox/*.default in
your home userspace.

You can delete the whole folder safely and it will give you a clean start.
Conversely you can just delete it selectively. To see hidden folders use
Ctrl+H in Nautilus or Alt+. in Dolphin.
