Reading file header to find metadata

I have to read various folders and extract meta-data from the Excel
files. Sometimes a non-Excel file has been 'saved' incorrectly as an
Excel file. Naturally, I can't open it properly. Is there any way to
first read the file header to see if the file is a valid Excel file?
