Random Freezing Ubuntu Hardy

I'm using Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 and the system keeps becoming unresponsive
at random intervals. It could be weeks between an incident or hours.
Looking at syslog reveals little, although the last two incidents were
close together when an iPod Shuffle (2nd Gen) was attached to the USB.
I've disconnected and am going to see if that does anything.

Given the random nature of these, is there any way to pin down what they
might be?
