OpenOffice.org Crashes

Date: Dec 17    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 349

I don't know if it's because I upgraded to Intrepid Ibex prematurely,
but for some reason OpenOffice.org crashes. It's worse in KDE4, but it
crashes in Gnome, too. In KDE, the splash screen and status bar icon
appear just fine, but then it suddenly quits without loading anything.
In Gnome, I'm able to open a document, but the only thing that appears
is the title bar. I decided to run oowriter in konsole, and this is
what turned up:

I18N: Operating system doesn't support locale "en_US"
user@computer:~$ The program '.' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
(Details: serial 966 error_code 8 request_code 42 minor_code 0)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error()
function.)

This is not a very friendly problem, especially since I need to view ppt
files as soon as possible.

just visited <http://www.openoffice.org/> and there's a blurb
about version 3.0 per:

" OpenOffice.org 3.0 is available! Three years in development,
" OpenOffice.org 3.0 is now available.

A Linux DEB file of version 3.0 is available.

We need people to beta test distros and when you run a beta that is what you are
doing. You should post a bug report. I have 8.10 running fine and have
OpenOffice 3.0 installed with no problems. It could be just something triggered
by your configuration which is why it is good to post a bug report so the
developers can fix it.

Never install a beta and use it as your main OS, at least until the beta is
locked just before final release, which is too early still. I hope that you
still have 8.04 installed to use in the meantime.

I finally installed OpenOffice.org 3.0, but it still can't load. It
doesn't even give an error message when I run it form the command line.
When I load it, OO gives me a "document recovery" window with no
documents to recover. Then when I hit "OKAY," it just quits.
Okay, I guess I lied, it does give an error message:
I18N: Operating system doesn't support locale "en_US"

Actually, I am running 8.10, but Intrepid Ibex will be out in 5 days.
Thanks for the tip, I'll keep it in mind.
