Linux with temptation

Date: Jan 29    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 289

For along time, I
have looked at Linux with temptation. When my friends told me to leave it
alone, it was like telling someone the paint was wet. I just had to find out on
my own. Please be paient with me. I just bought a laptop on ebay loaded with
ubuntu. Now I have no reason not to learn alittle about linux. I will most
likely make a lot of mistakes and ask questions, when I get my nerve up.

How do you find out? I'm very green.

To find out which version of Ubuntu you are using, look at the top
left of the screen and you should see the words: Applications, Places
and System. These are menu items and clicking on the 'System' one will
produce a drop down menu with one of the items 'About Ubuntu'. Click
on this and it will tell you which version you are running, along with
some useful information about what Ubuntu is all about. Once we know
the version of Ubuntu you are using it will help a lot.

As for dial-up. This isn't officially supported in Ubuntu but that
doesn't mean it won't work, just that it might be an uphill task
getting it working. Also AFAIK, Juno isn't Linux friendly anyway and
you'll get no help from them regarding setting up.

Now - Wi-Fi can be used anywhere there's a signal and whenever the
laptop is in range of a signal it can connect. There is an icon on the
top right that relates to network connections and clicking on it will
produce a drop down list with the wireless signals it can see. Click
on one of them to connect - giving the relevant access key of course.

To find out what version of Linux you are using, on the top
panel is the word "System", no quotes, click on that and you will
see at the bottom "About Ubuntu", or maybe what ever version you
are using, it will tell you what you have loaded. Much like a Windows
system you can click on help and get information on what you are using.

This can work, but it is more likely to have errors than using the
previously advised method from the terminal For example, many people using
Ubuntu have reported that the About Ubuntu for 10.10 listed it as 11.04 for
months. Human error is the likely cause. Whereas the other method goes back
to the root folders to find the info.
