I have recently been running ubuntu 8.04 lts desktop edition on my laptop using
the live cd, and have had problems with my display not being recognised by
ubuntu, I do have drivers for my laptop using windows, will these same drivers
work with ubuntu and how do i install them?
Or is there a program that i could install through synaptic which will look for
my display card and do the necesary work to get it all working correctly?
My diplay driver under windows is a VIA/S3G UniChrome Pro IGP, my laptop is a
Fujitsu Siemens amilo pro v 2030

You will need Linux drivers for your video card. NVIDA and ATI are
pretty Linux friendly and supply Linux drivers for a broad range of
their cards.

I don't know about VIA. Hopefully someone else here can give you info on that.

I tried different distros like PClinuxOS gnome and it picks up my video card no
problem, so there is a driver out there somewhere i just need to know how to get
it and where to put it, and how ?

Yes i have tried doing what you have suggested and i still have no luck, I have
tried clicking on detect monitor but nothing, it's a strange one, I will find a
way to solve this because I am determind to use ubuntu, as I am so p***ed off
with xp and the exploits of microsoft.

Not saying you will find it right away, but try googling for your video
driver's driver set. For example, let's say you had a ati radion 100 12mb
graphics card. You could search for something along the lines of 'ubuntu
8.04 driver cardname' and usually within a page or two of results you will
find what you are looking for, especially if it is a common chip set and
program.

have you checked your monitor settings? could be that. It was on mine. I dont
have a la top but my chip set is via. Ubuntu has allways picked up all of those
for me. I was only getting 800x600 resolution,It picks up my monitor but want
give but one or two low hesoutions. You have to change it from screen and
graphics. On the screen page where it says monitor click on it. It wil open a new
window.Seton geeric model and lcd panel with whatever reslution you want. Mabe
this will help.
