That's an interesting question which someone else will have to give
the definitive answer to. All I can say is that ext4 systems can read
ext3 files. It may be when an ext3 file is copied to an ext4 drive it
is automatically upgraded to ext4. If the whole thing is backed up
that may not be the case though.
