Remembering password during login

Date: Dec 18    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 299

Is there any possible way to have the login screen remember the password
so you don't have to type it in every time? I know there is automatic
login available, but that won't allow you to select which DE you want
when you log in, it will go to the default one every time. I would like
to have something where I just simply select the DE I want and push ok
and it will log in immediately. Are there any options for this?

I've not seen a feature like that. The whole idea of the password is
security. If it self filled in, then it wouldn't really be a
password.

That being said, my userid and password on my Linux computer are both
three characters.

Doesn't take real long to type in... You might try a one character password.

A 3 character password might as well not exist. The point of an automatic
login is so that over the network you are protected as the password can be
strong and such. However, locally, you don't have to worry about it. A
short password is worse because over the network the short password is still
nearly as insecure as not having one at all. Suppose it is all about how
secure you believe your network to be.

I know there is an option in GDM, try poking around with the login setup,
the same screen that you can configure your login GDM theme from. I know it
is in there somewhere.

Additionally, auto login has the bonus of not giving users the choice of
going into xterm or any failsafe modes from GDM. Right into your default
environment.
