real world uses for Java

I was wondering what the real world uses for Java are. Is it
primarily in web based programs or applications such as games or other
applications? Or does it depend on the company?

Java is adequate in any situation that scalability and hardware
independency is needed.

there is a performance handcap compared to c/c++ but the difference
is not big nowadays...

most companies adopt java  manly to do the dinamic web  aplications
(servlets/jsps)

The major reason this question doesn't seem to be getting a lot of
responses is that it almost feels like troll bait :)

Java has pros and cons for all of it's choices. It can be used (quite
successfully) for all of your options.

Although I probably wouldn't write Doom4 in Java
