Installed but not found

In 11.04 I have not been impressed with Libre Office so I installed both
Gnome Office and KOffice to try them out. In Software Center they show up as
installed but I can't launch them from anywhere, they're not in
applications. Using unity they show up as available but clicking on the item
there just brings up Sotware Center where they are installed!!

You can install OpenOffice if you don't like LibreOffice, not that there is
much difference. The problem with the Software Centre is that it does not
show dependencies and gives little feedback, which is why I use Synaptic
instead. If you are using Unity then it runs GTK apps, but not QT which is
part of KDE. When you install KOffice in Synaptic it advises you that it
needs to install the KDE dependencies. I am not sure how well this works in
Software Centre. On my system (Kubuntu with Unity also installed) when I
switch to Unity KOffice is available. I am not sure about GNOME Office
because I have never used it.

I am not a fan of either the Software Centre or Unity (or GNOME 3). It is
dumbing things down to an extreme point IMO. Unity is fine for my netbook,
but on my desktop computer with a large monitor it is too much work and not
a fun experience. The Software Centre has some merits, but it is not
informative enough for me.

The lack of a menu in Unity makes it hard to fix your problem. I don't know
that the entries in the Launcher or Dash are editable at this point. I would
load Synaptic and try to Re-install each, if i had this problem.

I was trying to use Unity but it slows me down too much so I log in on
Classic now. I have reinstalled both Koffice and gnome office from synaptic
and they're both hiding still. Could I open in Terminal? How?

The command for the KOffice word processor is kword. Try Alt-F2 and
type kword or kspread or kexi or kpresenter or korganizer or kontact
or krita or kaddressbook, etc. I do not have GNOME Office installed,
but imagine it is similar. If you know the application you can
probably guess. Remember no spaces and probably lowercase only.

If none launch then you have a bigger problem and need to find why it
is not installing. You can edit the menu in classic GNOME so if they
launch you can add a launcher to the menu. I think that if you right
click on the menu you can edit it. I am in KDE now and that is the way
it work there. Or you could just use KDE where everything just works.
