grub error: no such device

Date: Nov 29    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 427

Ubuntu 10.04 and I have messed up the computer's boot sequence.

hda (40 GB) has Win XP Pro (5 partitions: C, D, E, F and G).
hdb (40 GB) has Ubuntu 10.04, with / and swap partitions.

Booting up from the Ubuntu CDROM is OK.

Booting up normally (no disk) provided the dual boot choices, until I started
and aborted a fresh Ubuntu installation, as described below.
Now, booting up with no disk results in the error message:
error: no such device: 6033da9b- etc...
grub rescue>

Booting with the Win XP CD results in the same error message.
Booting into Win XP with the Win XP boot floppy is successful.

Here is what I did yesterday to cause the problem:
I booted from the Ubuntu CD and started a fresh installation, planning to change
the hdb partitions to / /home and swap. After defining the new partitions, I had
to break off the installation, so clicked the QUIT button in the graphical
installer window.

The installer appeared to quit cleanly. It obviously didn't.

How do I fix this?

If you need more info, it can be obtained. Both OSs are working. All files are
are backed up.

The boot into Win XP is fixed. Partition Commander 10, a Windows program,
restored the MBR for me.

Now would be a good time to use a Puppy Live CD to mount the messed up Ubuntu
partitions and copy stuff off to USB or extra space on WinXP drive. Re-install
Ubuntu 10.04 or try 10.10 and partition Ubuntu hard drive the way you want after
you decide on version, etc. Then you can mount both hard drives in Puppy and
copy stuff you want back to Ubuntu. Or perhaps you prefer Ubuntu for this?

Have fun, I need to buy the new version of Partition Commander, too, but I just
got the SystemSuite 10 for the WinXP computer.

You need to complete the installation. The old boot loader at /boot/grub/
would have been overwritten at the earliest phase, but you aborted before
the new one was written to the MBR. The one that the MBR is looking for no
longer exist hence the no disk error.
