Excessive Disk Checking

Date: Nov 26    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 321

I am running Kubuntu 10.10. Nearly every time I
boot, the system starts to check the HD. Can I choose the
frequency for this?

It should not check it every time. Once you run the consistency check, it
should wait for about fifty times counting each time it is mounted before
you see the message again. If you decline the check then you will get it
every time until you do check it. Note: you may see the message more often
if you have multiple drives or partitions, as they are logged separately.

Linux file systems are different from Windows and should be handled
according to its own procedures. If you try to circumvent them then you will
run into trouble. Linux file systems are very durable. They never need
fragmenting. But you have to treat them right. Consistency checks are part
of that.

I suggest that you run fsck on that partition and then the message should
stop.

It is not a message, it actually starts to run the check part way
through
the boot sequence.

I do not decline but let it spend a minute or so
doing the check. But. next boot time up it comes again!

Only one drive on this desktop. It seems that the counter is not
recognising that the check has been done.

Have you run the Ubuntu Disk Utility to see if it thinks your hard drive or card
is healthy? Perhaps it sees something you should be aware of?
