database file-sharing between MS and Linux format

Date: Dec 31    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 379

I have a database which I started from MS Access in MS Office '97, but
when I email it to my Linux Ubuntu machine, I can open it with
OpenOffice Base but it isn't recognizing any of the data fields or the
data which I put into the Access file. Is Ubuntu Base compatible with
MS Access?

I have found it so - perhaps some fields in your database have field
properties and data types not recognised by OO-Base. I have used MS
Office97 and transferred all [i.e. powerpoint, word, access, excel] to OO.

I forgot to mention... i converted from access to OO on windows machine
transferring to a usb disk drive fat32. Then read the files with linux
running OO. Perhaps that made a difference. I can't think that the file
format should affect it?

Well at least that work for you. If you save the data tables as MS office XXXX
year it should transfer with ease. Unless you have tables that link up for data
on the network server. OO may be looking for the links and cannot.

Could I upload the Access database file here to see if anyone can
bring it up thru Ubuntu? It's just a draft file so I'm not worried
about any sensitive or private info getting passed around.

I want to work with the file on either the Windoze box or the Linux
box, and as Ubuntu won't recognize my floppy drive (not a big
problem), I will just toss the updated file back and forth via email
to work with my updates as I progress on the data.

Actually, I think I found a better answer.

I exported the data into HTML and imported it into an Excel
spreadsheet. This part worked OK. So I'm thinking the data will work
better as a spreadsheet rather than as a database anyway. I'll see if
Ubuntu OpenOffice can work with it as a spreadsheet.

I'll have a look at it if you like. Thought's just occurred regarding
your floppy drive... is it 6.10 you're using - i had the same problem.

Another thought - if you have a googlemail account you could use their
online app and check it there... i only used it for a word file but it
works for all the MS office apps.
