Is there a program in the repositories that will list all of the hardware
and software installed on the machine?
Mostly right now I need to know what type socket the CPU uses so I can
replace a very noisy fan. I'm afraid the fan will go out on me and fry the
system.

I use Device Manger. I installed it through the Add/Remove button under
Applications.
