Airplay equivalent on Linux

  Date: Feb 12    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 841

I have a laptop (fedora) in one room and would like to send audio
wirelessly to my desktop (ubuntu) which is hooked up to some rather large
speakers nearby.

Is there a way I can do that? I believe Apple have something called Airplay
which allows their devices to do just that. So I was wondering if I could
do that in Linux in some way e.g. like through pulseaudio or DLNA stuff.

I have looked online but I couldn't find a way to send audio from all apps
on my laptop eg through browser, spotify, music files basically all the
audio output from my laptop to be sent to my desktop through my network
(e.g going through my home router). Any useful links or guides to achieve
this would be much appreciated.

I've never done it, but it's my understanding that Pulseaudio can do what you
want.

It took a while but I got it to work by doing this:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PulseAudio/Examples#When_everything_else_se\
ems_to_fail

When everything else seems to fail

The following is a quickfix and NOT a permanent solution

On the Server:

$ paprefs

Go to Network Access -> Enable access to local sound devices (Also check
both 'Allow discover' and 'Don't require authentication').

On the Client:

$ export PULSE_SERVER=server.ip && mplayer test.mp3
