x=1 in a column

I would like to know to x=1 in a column. In other words if I put X in
row 2 column 2 when I add the total of x's in column 2 it will give me
a figure (example 3 if i have 3 x's in column 2)

You can use the countif or sumif functions probably... but I'm afraid
your post isn't all that clear. Can you be more specific?
