Looks like USC is the problem and many others finding it's crashing
out when trying to install anything. Installed Synaptic using terminal
and that installs packages just fine. Restricted extras / gimp etc all
in.

For an Alpha 1 it appears pretty stable !

Another way to try this is to install testdrive via PPA. It downloads the
daily ISO and runs in in qemu. You may have to change the preferences if
you are running 64-bit. It gives an error about not supporting your
architecture as it is set for i386. Change to AMD64, then close and re-open.

To install from commandline, cut and paste into a terminal:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:testdrive

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install testdrive

Think I'll try it on a spare laptop I have here - HD failed and
customer isn't sure whether to have anew drive or not so I can always
fit a spare HD and try a full install of Perfect on that and let it do
the daily updates.
