OLE on a LAN

This not exactly an Excel question, but perhaps someone may have the
answer I seek.

I have an Access 97 application. Using Access as the client, I use OLE
to access other Microsoft apps. For instance, an Access 97 form may
contain a customer list. By clicking on the customer's address,
Microsoft MapPoint opens with a map to that address.

However, I can only get this to work on a single computer (which
requires separate server apps on each computer, of course); not on the
LAN. I would like to put the server applications on the data server.

Does OLE work over a LAN?

Not sure I've ever tried it, but you might have more success using mapped
drives, rather than the "double backslash" style of network addressing.
You'd need to use the same drive letter on each computer, but that's
probably easy to arrange.
