Missing display - Dell Latitude c840

I have enjoyed lurking, reading your posts and hopefully, learning.

Been struggling with a very slow latitude and Ubuntu 11.04..that is
until a few posts back I read with interest that 10.04 is quicker, so
downloaded and installed 10.04 and sure enough it is much faster...
downloaded various system files including nvidia driver and got it
running great!!! trouble is... boot up this morning and it loads with
a display until suddenly no display, I reboot with live CD and no
problems with the display!!!!!

Is there some way I can re-enable the display?? as I don`t fancy a
re-install ... I`ve tried keystrokes (fn+ other keys) without success,
the dell is faster but not that fast as make a re-install intersting.

With windows there is safe mode...is there anything like that with
linux???

You can reconfigure the xserver from the rescue mode on grub or the
commandline. I would check that the drivers are installed first using
hardware drivers. It is likely that you updated the kernel as part of an
upgrade and the kernel and xserver are mismatched. This sometimes happens
when an upgrade is partial. See this:

rg-server/

on how to use the commandline to fix the xserver. This is the last resort.
Check hardware drivers first, though.

You will likely have to boot the computer into rescue mode or you can try to
reboot from grub in a previous kernel (lower in the list). You can also try
a boot parameter to run in vesa and then fix it with the proper driver and
xserver. See: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCDBootOptions

Had no joy with the rescue mode (not too good programming so I just re-installed
from cd working a treat now (again, we`ll see what tomorrow brings,,heh )

As an aside, I also installed 11.04 on a desktop with 2gb ram and p4
intel....rubbish, re-installed with 10.04 and it is now quicker than
the original XP!!

My usb wifi dongle ran without installing software ...Belkin f5d7050 -
v4014uk....
