Intel Atom 2700MUD

Date: Feb 12    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 585

My ageing computer crashed this week, and I needed a quick fix to get it going
again. I bought an Intel Atom 2700MUD motherboard and 2 GB RAM, which works very
well with Ubuntu 11.04, except for one little problem. There are no video
drivers for the new Intel video on the MB. To compound the problem, there is no
PCI Express slot and no PCI video cards available locally. (Panama) I ordered a
PCI card from Amazon, but in the meantime, it's working in 1024x768 mode,
forcing me to set my 22 inch LG monitor to 4x3 format. In order to make it work,
I had to delete the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.

This is a great little board, but be aware of the video limitation if you buy.
Drivers are, of course, available for Windows.

A quick Google found the link below for installing the video drivers.
Not 100% apparently from the comments but an option to try. Says it's
for 12.04 but should work on 11.04 ( or you may decide to use 12.04
anyway due to the extended support as you'll be needing to upgrade
11.04 anyway before too long !! ).

I tried that procedure, but was unable to install the driver, so I
guess it doesn't work with 11.04.

Anyway, I have a PCI video card on the way and that should fix the problem.

Fair enough, you are aware that 11.04 goes 'end of life' in October
whereas 12.04 is supported until April 2017 ? Not that 11.04 will stop
working but to access the repositories you'll need to tweak the update
manager and packages will not be updated to newer versions.

Yes I was aware of EOL for 11.04, but I detest the new UI. Fortunately I
discovered Lubuntu and have installed 12.04, which did not cure my problem. The
Cedarview drivers work only with 32 bit OS, and I am running 64 bit. Here is the
message I got when I attempted to add the repository.

You are about to add the following PPA to your system:

These packages are now in 12.04 in multiverse as of 8/17/2012, please don't use
this PPA.

Some notes:

* i386 *only*, there will not be amd64 support (even in windows!)
* >= 4GB ram needs mem=4G added to the kernel command line
* If your bios exposes a phantom LVDS device (and many do), update your bios to
get the fix or add video=LVDS-1:d to the kernel command line
* Unity3D sessions do not work. GL support in general is very sketchy

I wasn't over enthusiastic with Unity either though it seems to be
fine for the lighter user. Switched to Kubuntu and this suits my needs
a lot better

The PPA error is because you do not need that PPA. It duplicates what is
already in the repos in Multiverse section. If you commit that source then
it will always show as a duplicated source when you use the
package manager. My advice is to remove that line or not add the PPA in the
first place.

You can now run 32-bit packages in a 64-bit Ubuntu installation. It may be
tricky with a graphics driver, though, and not worth the time spent to get
it working right You could re-install the 32-bit version of Lubuntu if your
installation is quite recent and have not invested much time in it. BTW,
the difference between Lubuntu and Ubuntu is the desktop environment, LXDE
instead of Unity. Graphics drivers work at a lower level and would work or
not in both.

For what it is worth, I have a eeePC with Atom processor and Intel graphics
chipset and 12.04 32-bit works fine. I realise that your graphics card may
be different and more of a headache, but think there is hope. Intel is
generally well supported in Linux. My eeePC has 1 GB of RAM and Unity and
KDE work fine, but think that LXDE or XFCE would be a better choice for
less RAM.

Thanks to both of you for the help. I also tried installing the drive from
Synaptic, but it will not install on 64 bit, My video card will be here in a few
days, and that should solve the problem. In the meantime, if anyone has
Cedarview installed on an Intel Atom 2700MUD with 64 bit OS, please tell me how
you did it.
