How to generate custom Layouts ?

I want to know how to genetate custom Layouts for Applets or Applications.

I mean while using predefined layouts like GridLayout , I can't set the exact
size and position of different GUI elements.

Please if anybody can help me then I would be thankful to him or her.

Have you ever try to look into Matthew Robinson and
Pavel Vorobiev Swing's book published by Manning? I
have found out by study Java Online alone will not
make you sufficent in Java. Finding the right book to
read is also another challenge. But trust me with
that book your knowledge in GUI design will enhance
into a higher level.
