I use the Google translator. It is free, and I use it for Spanish to English
and German to English. I keep it on my homepage. So far, it has been the
best, and the cheapest that I have found. In German to make an Eszett one
would push Alt + 0223. Or Alt + 225. You know....the letter that looks like
a giant B with a tail, and is the double s sound?

or make a compose key and tap "compose s s" ß you can assign a key to
be your compose key under system > preferences > keyboard > layouts >
options > compose key position.

I use the right alt key here.

most of the key combos are quite intuitive but google should turn up a
list.
